DPAS LIVE REVIEW The
Hughes Turner Project Rio's, Bradford, England . April 6th With a choice of songs whic seemed fairly predictable, HTP took a packed Rio's by storm, although I got the impression that it was the 'H' part of the combo that most had turned up to see. Whilst Joe was ok, he didn't (couldn't) sing anything that Glenn wouldn't have been able to sing himself and spent about half-an-hour off-stage in the middle of the set. The fact that it was the 30th anniversary of Cal Jam wasn't lost on Glenn who mentioned the fact before launching into a lengthy 'Mistreated' which proved to be one of the evening's highlights. Elsewhere, whilst playing my favourite track from the album they were notionally promoting ('Losing My Head') there weren't many others from 'HTP2' on offer. So whist a good performance (guitarist JJ Marsh, replete in Alphonse Mouzon / Tommy Bolin style 'pimp' hat, just gets better every time I see him) an overhaul of the set-list would be good. The band are good enough to push their current efforts, rather than falling back on the Purple & Rainbow staples quite so much. Still, as they'd only played a couple of shows on UK soil in the past, maybe they were giving the crowd a chance to 'catch-up' a bit. Nobody else seemed to be complaining. review: Tim Summers |
