DPAS REPORT & REVIEW

Deep Purple Hit Brazil
September 2003

Deep Purple have been busy in Brazil in advance of their tour there. Vitão Bonesso has been keeping tabs:

"The first member to arrive was Ian Paice, who flew in to São Paulo along with his roadie, Sean. They arrived at Cumbica airport on September 7th (independence day here in Brazil!) Ian appeared on my Brasil 2000 fm radio show (Backstage) on the same day for the first interview of his visit. The interview went out at 10:00 pm (lasting 1 hour), with Ian discussing many subjects, including Bananas, drum kits, Deep Purple bootlegs, etc .... During the interview I played songs such .... Bananas (live in Berlin 2003), Hush (live in Inglewood 1968), On The Road Again (from PAL's BBC live in concert), and She Said Yeah (from McCartney's Run Devil Run). The drum clinic (or 'workshop') took place the next day, September 8th, at 9:00 pm.

Ian Paice 'Workshow'
Blen Blen, Sao Paulo
September 8th 2003

Ian Paice arrived here exactly three years after Purple's first concert of the Concerto Tour, also in São Paulo.

On September 8th, there was a workshop / workshow / drum clinic at the ridiculously named night club, Blen-Blen. This workshow (that's the name I will use now) was divided into two parts. The first one started with a four-minute drum solo. After that, Ian answered audience questions. Between the questions and answers, Ian played the intro from You Fool No One, Fireball and Chasing Shadows. At the end of the first part of the Workshow, Ian did another four-minute drum solo, even more powerful than the first one. At the finale of this second solo, he showed his very well known one-hand drum roll trick.

For the second part of the evening, Brazilian drummer Paulo Zinner and his band joined Ian Paice. It was very nice to see a big fan playing together with his idol, and great to hear two drummers, even better if one is Paice! The first song was they played was Living Wreck. In 1999, I asked which songs Deep Purple would like to play live: Big Ian said Place in Line, and Ian Paice said Living Wreck. I know it was not Deep Purple playing it, but I am sure he was happy for that chance. Living Wreck was followed by a seven-minute jam. Well, maybe not a jam as such - I just can't remember the name of the song, if it was a song. It consisted of a one-minute band intro, a four-minute drum battle and again the band to end it. The third song was Fireball with Paulo Zinner doing the intro. Very nice version of the song, with the Into the Fire intro added to the end.

To end the night they played Black Night (more than 10 minutes long) with another four-minute drum battle. A wonderful night had by all. Very exciting!

Ian Gillan arrived in São Paulo at 8:00 am on September 9th. Roger, Don, Steve and the rest of crew followed on September 10th at 7.00am. The first press conference was held at their hotel (the Caesar) at 1:00 pm which lasted for 40 minutes. The band then gave exclusive interviews for magazines, TV and radio (including me with Gillan and Glover).

At 4:15 pm the band left the hotel for Globo TV (in heavy traffic and rain), for an interview on "Programa Do Jô" (a chat show similar to the Jay Leno's). After a one hour soundcheck, the band played 'I Got Your Number' before their interview with host Jô Soares. The questions were simply stupid! Once that was over the band played 'Haunted' and 'Smoke On The Water'. The show ended at 9:00 pm. and all the members returned to their hotel.

On September 11th at 7:00 am the crew left São Paulo for Goiania (a two hour flight). The band flew out at 11:00 am. By 5:00 pm. they were getting stuck into a four hour rehearsal for the first show of the Bananas tour, at Goiania on September 12th.

Regarding Deep Purple's participation on Globo TV's "Casseta & Planeta" comedy show next week in Rio, to be honest I don't think it's a good idea for them.

To hear my radio show, click on www.brasil2000.com.br then "ouça a radio". The show goes on air every Sunday 9 to 11 pm (Brazilian time). On the next edition I'll reprise my Ian Paice interview. The interviews with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover will be on the following week's."
