LIVE REVIEW After the band having denied any participation in the TV show Casseta & Planeta, they had to do it to avoid problems between other concerns. Comments afterwards from them about the recording included "it was good, but I understood absolutely nothing..." After Casseta e Planeta the band returned to the hotel and then set off for the ATL Hall (a 15 minute journey done in heavy rain).
Highway Star/ Woman From Tokyo/ Silver Tongue/ Lazy/ Contact Lost/ Haunted/ Space Truckin`/ I Got Your Number/ Knocking At Your Back Door/ Well Dressed Guitar/ House of Pain/ Don´s solo/ Perfect Strangers/ Smoke on the Water/ Hush/ Black Night. Some surprises:a change in the order of songs, the inclusion of Space Truckin´ and the comeback of Ian Paice's solo (small, but fuckin´great), in the middle of Hush. Bananas the song was dropped for this occasion (uh oh..), but Ian Gillan said that the song may return in the next shows. The band fly to Porto Alegre on the morning of 18th September for the first concert in the Kaiser Music Fest with Hellacopters and Sepultura...the confusion is coming .... review & scan : Vitão Bonesso
There wasn't a huge audience as in Goiânia and Recife. One problem was the rain. Second, there was a Helloween concert on the same day.
Don did a wonderful introduction to Lazy, which was followed by Contact Lost and Haunted . Then, Space Truckin!! The audience went mad!! It was a perfect trio of songs to act as a tribute to the Columbia crew members and also the 21 engineers Brasil lost last month on our extremely modest space programme when the rocket exploded on the ground. So, I think you can understand how moving was to listen to Space Truckin in Rio. I am still thinking about the first notes of it.
Don played "Garota de Ipanema" and "Saudade" in his solo spot, plus his usual party pieces including the Star Wars theme. The solo was an introduction to Perfect Strangers. Smoke on the Water wrappde up the main set. For the encore they played Hush, which included a minute long drum solo.The concert was rounded off with a brilliant version of Black Night. Before
Purple, a Brazilian pop-rock band played a 25 minute support slot. My
God... what a weird band !!!! At 10 pm Deep Purple took to the stage
and during their 100 minutes played a rather different set list:
Highway
Star was brilliant as ever and was followed by Woman From Tokyo.
New song Silver Tongue did not receive much of a reaction from
the audience . The album was just released, and most of people will
wait a while until buying the album, it's not like Europe.
The
second surprise was I Got You Number not played among the encores.
Its better like this. People didn't want to hear the song as an encore.
That said, of course the new ones must be included, and I am sure many
people will buy Bananas after the concerts. Knocking At Your Back
Door was very exciting too, but it was a short version. Well
Dressed Guitar still sounds brilliant, and was followed by House
of Pain. The audience really enjoyed that one.
